Four triterpenoid saponins, which were tentatively named prosapogenins CP₂, CP₆, CP₇ and CP₈, were isolated from the alkaline hydrolysate of crude saponin obtained from Clematis chinensis OSBECK. On the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence, they were characterized as follows : CP₂ (I), oleanolic acid 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside ; CP₆ (III), hederagenin 3-O-β-D-ribopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside ; CP₇ (VII), oleanolic acid 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-ribopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside ; CP₈ (IX), hederagenin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-ribopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside.
