Abstract

Analysis of 296 fatal beach swimming accidents occurring over the past decade in the Kanto Plains area of Japan indicated that “rip currents” present in the nearshore zone caused half of them. Accordingly, two year long field surveys were conducted on the currents at five beaches, with results finding several typical patterns of rip current-caused accidents.
