Responses of Hexaploid Triticale, Wheat, Rye and Barley to Salinity in Relation to Grain Yield

Abstract
Responses of three complete and seven substituted hexaploid triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) cultivars, six cultivars of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), five cultivars of rye (Secale cereale), and four cultivars of 6-row barley (Hordeum vulgare) to salinity in relation to grain yield were analyzed in sand culture, by the irrigation of 0, 25 and 50mM NaCl nutrient solutions. Average values of grain yield in the cultivars of each crop indicated that barley was the most tolerant to salinity among all the crops, followed by complete triticale. The tolerance of substituted triticale, wheat, and rye was similar. Great variations in salt tolerance among the cultivars were observed in each crop. At 50 mM NaCl, all the complete triticale cultivars and Beaver, Rosner and Yoreme among the substituted triticale cultivars showed a high salt tolerance, while Welsh and Koala were sensitive to salt. Among the wheat cultivars Kounosu-25 and Saitama-27 showed a high tolerance, and Sonalika and Norin-42 showed a low tolerance. The rye cultivars Vegetale, Vulgare and Petkus were salt-tolerant, and King-II was sensitive to salinity. The tolerance of all the four cultivars of barley was similar. Some yield contributing characters in several salt-sensitive cultivars, in terms of grain yield, were less affected by salinity than those in several tolerant cultivars. A positive correlation between the K/Na ratio and salt tolerance was noted in the triticale and wheat cultivars, whereas a negative correlation was found in barley. The varietal differences in the salinity tolerance were not due to differences in the cytoplasm and R-genome chromosome constitution in triticale.
