We report the case of an HIV infected patient who was discovered during dental treatment. The patient was a 25-year-old man in whom oral candidiasis was diagnosed by a dentist. The clinical diagnosis was oral candidiasis with immunodeficiency. The patient had a history of sexual relations with many partners. Laboratory tests revealed markedly decreased CD4 (69.9/μl) and a CD 4/CD 8 ratio of 0.09. HIV antibody was positive on both particle agglutination (PA) and Western blot (WB) analysis.
Since HIV infected patients show numerous oral manifestations, dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons have an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of AIDS.
