New binderless granulation was carried out by a 2-dimensional spouted bed, and the fluidization behavior of raw powder and produced granules was studied. Size distribution of granules produced by the granulator was similar to that of the conventional cylindrical spouted bed granulator. To evaluate the mechanical strength of granules, the compaction load on a granule was estimated by the compaction test of the granule bed, and the pressure strength of a granule was also measured. It was found that the relationship between the granule bed voidage and the consolidation pressure can be expressed by two lines on a semi-logarithmic chart. The compressive strength of a granule changes in proportion to the square of granule size. Furthermore, the estimated value of compressive strength from the bed compaction test was compared with the compressive strength of a granule, and it was found that there is a correlation between both values.
