The purpose of this study is to evaluate the capability of image information in obtaining the fineness of soil clods by real time measurement, as defined by mean-weight-diameter (MWD). Thirty-four kinds of image features were measured from the surface images of all the soil samples, which included 26 variations of MWD. The effective features, which showed significant differences among the 26 levels of MWD by analysis of variance, were extracted and used for multiple regression analysis. The proportion of the regression equation for estimating the MWD was over 0.95. The capability of image information was then evaluated for the real-time measurement of soil clod fineness.
