Abstract

At Murakami in Niigata, the event ‘Tour to watch the Dolls in Townhouse at Murakami, the Castle town’ is held on every March from 2000. It exhibits various dolls, which are kept by old families, in the old townhouses. This event is planned and managed by young inhabitants in Murakami, and gathered around 30, 000 people in 2000, 50, 000 in 2001 and 70, 000 in 2002. It is expected in this area to blow up economically, but is not sure whether the tourist effect is sustainable or not, because of plans to enlarge the streets, which should destruct the old townhouses. This paper examines the possibility of community development by cultural materials through the economical research on this event.
